Heartland Express (NASDAQ:HTLD) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of $0.02

语音播报

Heartland Express, Inc. (NASDAQ:HTLD) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.02 per share on the 7th of January. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 0.9%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.

Estimates Indicate Heartland Express' Dividend Coverage Likely To Improve

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Even though Heartland Express is not generating a profit, it is still paying a dividend. The company is also yet to generate cash flow, so the dividend sustainability is definitely questionable.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise exponentially over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 3.5%, so there isn't too much pressure on the dividend.

Heartland Express Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. There hasn't been much of a change in the dividend over the last 10 years. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though Heartland Express' EPS has declined at around 45% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. We can't deny that the payments have been very stable, but we are a little bit worried about the very high payout ratio. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Given that earnings are not growing, the dividend does not look nearly so attractive. Very few businesses see earnings consistently shrink year after year in perpetuity though, and so it might be worth seeing what the 5 analysts we track are forecasting for the future.
