It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But if you buy shares in a really great company, you can more than double your money. To wit, the Badger Infrastructure Solutions Ltd. (TSE:BDGI) share price has flown 198% in the last three years. That sort of return is as solid as granite. On top of that, the share price is up 24% in about a quarter.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 5.6%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Badger Infrastructure Solutions was able to grow its EPS at 88% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 44% is actually lower than the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Badger Infrastructure Solutions' TSR for the last 3 years was 216%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
We're pleased to report that Badger Infrastructure Solutions shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 110% over one year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 17% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Badger Infrastructure Solutions that you should be aware of before investing here.
