The board of Pokfulam Development Company Limited (HKG:225) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 6th of March, with investors receiving HK$0.32 per share. This means that the annual payment will be 6.3% of the current stock price, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Pokfulam Development Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. While Pokfulam Development is not profitable, it is paying out less than 75% of its free cash flow, which means that there is plenty left over for reinvestment into the business. We generally think that cash flow is more important than accounting measures of profit, so we are fairly comfortable with the dividend at this level.

Over the next year, EPS might fall by 59.9% based on recent performance. While this means that the company will be unprofitable, we generally believe cash flows are more important, and the current cash payout ratio is quite healthy, which gives us comfort.

Pokfulam Development Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was HK$0.27 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.36. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.9% a year over that time. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though Pokfulam Development's EPS has declined at around 60% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future.

Our Thoughts On Pokfulam Development's Dividend

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
