BHP, Rio Tinto to Test Caterpillar Electric Haul Trucks at Australian Iron Ore Mine

11:33 PM EST, 12/04/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Mining giants BHP (BHP.L, BHG.JO) and Rio Tinto (RIO.L) will begin on-site testing of the two Caterpillar 793 XE Early Learner battery-electric haul trucks delivered to BHP's Jimblebar iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The zero-emission trucks will be evaluated as a potential replacement for diesel in large-scale iron ore operations, the companies said Thursday. The trials will collect data on the technology and infrastructure needed to support lower-emission equipment, after which the miners will evaluate next steps toward larger-scale testing.
