Examining Cashflow Against DIGITALIFT's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

For the year to March 2026, DIGITALIFT had an accrual ratio of -0.37. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of JP¥251m, well over the JP¥176.0m it reported in profit. DIGITALIFT shareholders are no doubt pleased that free cash flow improved over the last twelve months.

Our Take On DIGITALIFT's Profit Performance

As we discussed above, DIGITALIFT's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think DIGITALIFT's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And it's also positive that the company showed enough improvement to book a profit this year, after losing money last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. When we did our research, we found 2 warning signs for DIGITALIFT (1 is potentially serious!) that we believe deserve your full attention.
