On December 5, 2025, the People's Court of Chaoyang District of Beijing handed down a first instance verdict on the family claim of some missing passengers of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. Since 2016, the families of 75 missing passengers have filed lawsuits one after another, demanding compensation for losses and the establishment of search and rescue funds from defendants such as Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia International Airlines Ltd., resulting in 78 cases. After a trial, the Chaoyang court found that at 1:22 a.m. local time on March 8, 2014, the Boeing civilian passenger plane with flight number MH370 operated by Malaysia Airlines lost its connection during the flight. On January 19, 2015, the Malaysian government issued a statement officially announcing the crash of flight MH370, and estimated that all 239 passengers and crew members on board had been killed. During the trial of the case, after multiple rounds of mediation presided over by the Chaoyang Court, the families of the passengers in 47 cases agreed with the defendants and withdrew the lawsuit after reaching a settlement. A total of 8 cases have been handed down this time, involving 8 passengers, all of whom have been declared dead in accordance with legal procedures. Based on the Montreal Convention and China's relevant laws, the court ordered Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia Airlines International to pay the passengers' families death compensation, funeral expenses, moral damages, and other losses and related expenses totaling more than RMB 2.9 million in each case. In the remaining 23 cases, the passengers' families have not applied for the passengers to be declared dead or have yet to complete the notification process, and are still being tried.
