A recent report warns that an accelerated global arms race is hampering efforts to combat climate change, and large quantities of key minerals originally used in fields such as renewable energy and clean transportation are being diverted to manufacture next-generation military equipment. According to the “Guardian” report, this study published by the US-British joint agency “Transformational Security Project” shows that the US Department of Defense is hoarding key minerals on a large scale through the National Defense Reserve Program, covering military technology such as precision guidance weapons, advanced communication systems, and emerging “artificial intelligence-driven autonomous combat platforms.” And these minerals are also the core raw materials for climate solutions such as solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and energy storage batteries. The report further stated that since US President Trump passed the “Big and American Act” this year, the Pentagon has set aside billions of dollars to expand the military reserve list of key minerals. The stocks include at least 38 minerals and metals, including lithium, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements, which are the basic materials on which the energy transition depends.
