Five months after announcing plans to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence, the Trump administration is shifting its focus to robotics. Three anonymous sources of knowledge revealed that the US Secretary of Commerce has recently met frequently with the CEO of the robotics industry and is making every effort to promote the development of the industry. Two of them also said that the government is considering issuing an executive order on robotics next year. A spokesman for the US Department of Commerce stated, “We are committed to the development of robotics and advanced manufacturing because they are critical to the return of key industries in the US.” Another person familiar with the matter said that the US Department of Transportation is also planning to set up a special robotics task force before the end of the year, but a spokesperson for the department has yet to comment on this. Attention to robotics is also rising on the US Capitol Hill. Previously, some Republican lawmakers proposed an amendment to the “National Defense Authorization Act” and proposed the establishment of the National Robotics Commission, but in the end, this amendment was not included in the bill. Currently, related legislative actions are still in progress.
