Peru's presidential candidate Rafael Belande was attacked by gunmen while driving in southern Lima on the 2nd. He was injured but his life was not in danger. According to police reports, Belande was attacked in the town of Cerro Azul, about 130 kilometers south of Lima. Two gunmen on motorcycles shot 89 times at a sports utility vehicle driven by Belande, while Belande returned fire with “at least 12 shots.” Footage broadcast on television showed that the gunman's bullet shattered the driver's car window, broken glass scratched Belande, and left blood stains on his face and shirt. Belande told media reporters that these were all “abrasions.” Belande is 50 years old. He is the grandson of former President Fernando Belande and was Peru's Minister of Energy. He told the police that he had not received any threats before.
